apple ipad vs Microsoft surface

The first thing to note is that Microsoft will launch 2 versions of their tablet the normal one that will compete with the iPad and the Pro version that will be more expensive and will only be released later on.

Screen

The iPads 2′s screen is 9.7 inches with a resolution 2048 x 1536. We do not know everything about the Surface’s screen but we do know that it will be larger than the iPads at 10.6 inches. We also know that only the Pro version will have an HD screen, so the version that will be competing with the iPad will not be HD so the resolution wont even be close to the iPads.

CPU

The iPad uses Apples A5X dual core processor with the ARM Cortex Architecture that uses quad core graphics. This powerful chip is what enables the use of the super high resolution. On Microsoft side, we dont really know much, we know that it will also be ARM based and it is also confirmed that Nvidia will manufacturer the chip.

Storage

The iPad comes on 3 different sizes 16GB , 32GB and 64GB. The iPad does not allow you to add any extra storage via slots. The Surface, on the other hand will come in a 32GB and 64GB version but will allow you to add more storage space via microSD card slots.

Thickness

The iPad is 9.4 mm thick while the Surface is 9.3mm thick, so pretty much the same.

Weight

Both tablets will weigh about the same.

Camera

The iPad has a 5 mexa pixel on the back and a VGA quality camera on the front. The Surface will have also have 2 cameras but the exact specification has not been released, they have however said that they will both be “LifeCam” Cameras.

Battery

The iPad uses a 42.5Wh battery that yields about 10 hours battery time. The Surface will come with a 31.5Wh battery. The exact battery life has not been given but it should be slightly less than the iPads.

OS

The iPad uses the very popular iOS operating system. They have recently announced that iOS 6 will be released in the near future. The Surface, on the other hand will use an RT version of Micosoft Windows 8 that uses the new Metro interface. You will also have access to some of the same features that are available on the Desktop version like Office.
